Happy End of Summer!
According to the Chinese Lunar calendar, August 23rd marked the beginning of chu shu (处暑), or "the end of summer heat," when nature begins to shift from summer-like temperatures into more fall-like weather. Historically, chu shu was of great importance to Chinese farmers, as it signaled the time to prepare for autumn harvest.
According to TCM, harmonizing with Nature is always of utmost importance for wellness. To that end, wearing lighter clothes that reveal bare skin can help to release heat accumulated during the summer and to activate genetic and energetic changes our bodies need for the upcoming colder weather. Eating cooling, moisturizing foods, such as pears, honey, almonds, and chrysanthemum tea, can also aid one's body in adapting to more yin seasonal energies. These foods also benefit the Lung and Large Intestine -- the organs energetically associated with and "in charge" during Autumn.
Autumn is Nature's time to reap, assess, and organize all the growth and abundance from summer, to store for the coming winter. It's a time to let go of what is no longer needed, including old habits and beliefs that no longer serve you. If you normally find this transition period challenging, take some time to rest and support your Lung and Large Intestine organs, whose purpose is to help you let go and keep what is valuable, facilitating maximum harmony with Nature. Read more here to learn how to best support your Lung and Large Intestine's energetic duties at this time.
As autumn approaches, may you enjoy the "fruits" of summer and carry their wisdom into the months ahead for the remainder of 2025.
