May 5th marked the official "start of summer" (lì xià, 立夏) this year according to the Chinese lunar calendar. As we approach the next phase of summer that begins on June 5th (máng zhǒng, 芒种, or "Grain in Ear"), all of Nature in the Northern Hemisphere is in full growth, despite the still variable temperatures and chilly nights.
According to Taoist philosophy, everything in Nature has consciousness, and all consciousness has purpose. Every season has a unique consciousness and therefore a purpose, which supports each phase of the cycle of life for all beings on Earth. The ancient framework of Five Element Theory describes the consciousness of Summer energy as being embodied by the Heart, an organ that is associated with the frequency of love, joy, and inner contentment.
It's interesting to note that these emotions vibrationally match the time during which Nature pursues its fullest potential in growth, from flower to fruit. This energetic correlation suggests that doing what brings us joy and what we love can guide each one of us to our unique purpose, to reach our highest potential in life. Follow your Heart, enjoy your life, and you'll find not only true inner peace but also meaning in your existence here on earth.
